Yiwu: small commodities, small minimums, shared containers

Yiwu, in Zhejiang province, is what happens when a marketplace becomes a city. Its International Trade City, commonly described as the largest small-commodities wholesale market in the world, runs to tens of thousands of booths across connected halls: toys, housewares, stationery, fashion accessories, tools, décor, festival goods. If it retails for under twenty pounds almost anywhere on earth, somebody in Yiwu wholesales it.

Why West Africa buys here

Yiwu's superpower is the low minimum order. Where a factory wants ten thousand units of one thing, a Yiwu vendor will sell three hundred, which lets an Onitsha or Kejetia trader assemble a genuinely diversified consignment: fifty product lines, one container, one bet spread fifty ways. That model built the market stalls of West Africa, and it comes with its own distinctive risks: many small vendors means many small chances for substitution, short counts and quality drift, and the consolidator who gathers everything into one box becomes the least visible, most trusted actor in the chain.

Making mixed cargo safe
