Kumasi: the interior's great market city

Kumasi is where Ghana's interior does business. The Ashanti capital's Kejetia market complex, rebuilt into one of the largest covered markets in West Africa, anchors a commercial ecosystem that supplies the middle belt, the north, and traders who cross from Côte d'Ivoire and Burkina Faso. What Onitsha is to Nigeria's east, Kumasi is to Ghana's inland: the place where imported goods meet regional distribution.

A redistribution economy

Little of what Kumasi sells arrives there first-hand. Goods land at Tema, clear customs, and travel the two-hundred-and-fifty-kilometre road north: a leg with its own costs, risks and timing that Verifra's logistics service quotes explicitly rather than burying in a lump sum. Kumasi's wholesalers then break bulk for a vast retail hinterland. That two-step structure creates two distinct protection needs: the Kumasi wholesaler importing through Tema needs origin-side verification, escrow and inspection exactly like any coastal importer; and the up-country retailer restocking from Kejetia needs to know the wholesaler is real, the stock exists and the truck will actually leave.

The Ashanti region's own production is quietly export-grade: furniture and carved woodwork, kente and garment lines, processed foods, and a strong crafts sector with devoted diaspora demand. For these producers the barrier has never been quality: it is that a buyer in London or Houston cannot see the workshop. Sharing containers to the interior

Kumasi's import volumes are made for groupage. Few of the city's wholesalers fill a forty-foot container alone, and pooled boxes from Guangzhou or Yiwu into Tema (with the inland leg quoted through to Kumasi) let five or six businesses split freight, share one supervised stuffing and keep every member's funds in partner-held escrow until the pool confirms. No phantom members, no vanished consolidator, no cash handed to whoever claimed space in a container nobody ever saw.

Why local presence matters here

Kumasi trade is relational, cash-cycled and fast. An inspection scheduled for Thursday must happen Thursday; an agent who knows which plaza gate to use is worth ten phone calls.
