Exporting from Nigeria to China: proof travels with the goods

China's zero-tariff regime opened a serious lane for Nigerian exporters. Verifra's own agents verify produce, premises and loading in Nigeria so Chinese buyers can commit, and exporters get paid on evidence.

For decades the China–Nigeria relationship ran overwhelmingly one way. That is changing: China now applies zero tariffs to imports from almost all African countries, and Chinese buyers have real, growing appetite for what Nigeria grows and digs (sesame from the middle belt, cashew, hibiscus flower, ginger, minerals, and an emerging layer of processed goods behind them).

The lane's constraint has never been demand. It is that a buyer in Qingdao or Guangzhou has no way to trust a supplier in Kano or Lagos they found through a trade portal, and Nigerian exporters, burned by documents-against-acceptance adventures, have no way to trust distant buyers either. Two-sided suspicion; thin trade.

Verifra's home-ground advantage, pointed east

On this direction, our strongest asset works at the origin: Verifra's own agents in Nigeria. Premises verification means an agent physically at the exporter's warehouse or processing site. Produce inspection means sampling against the contract specification (grade, moisture, purity, packing) before anything seals. Loading supervision means the container stuffed on camera with seal numbers recorded. Every capture geotagged, timestamped, hashed.

For the Chinese buyer, that converts an unknown African counterparty into a documented one, with a report they can verify through its public QR seal. For the Nigerian exporter, the same protocol converts payment risk into a schedule: the buyer's funds sit with a licensed escrow partner from agreement, and releases fire as the evidence lands (at inspection, at loading, at the bill of lading) rather than whenever a distant counterparty feels ready.

The mechanics eastbound

Escrow is held in USD, GBP or EUR; settlement toward the Nigerian exporter runs through licensed local payout providers; the buyer's side settles through licensed channels appropriate to China. Verifra holds nothing, converts nothing bindingly, and charges its orchestration fee separately and visibly.

What inspection means for commodities

Commodity export inspection is its own discipline, and it is done at origin or not at all. Grade and moisture are measured before sealing because they cannot be argued about afterwards; foreign-matter and purity checks follow the contract's declared tolerances; packing and fumigation documentation is captured alongside the physical evidence. The report states observed facts against the declared specification, which is precisely the language commodity buyers and their banks need.

Building the habit

Most exporters start this lane with one verified transaction (often a single-container commodity deal) and let the completed-deal record do the marketing: verification evidence, inspection reports and an on-time payment history that future buyers can check. Trade grows on proof. The covered Nigerian cities, the corridor hub and the reverse import direction are linked below.

Local questions

Why would a Chinese buyer trust a Nigerian exporter they've never met?
They don't have to. That is the point. The exporter's premises and capability are verified by Verifra's own agents, the consignment is inspected against the contract, loading is supervised with seals recorded, and the buyer's funds sit in licensed escrow releasing only against those events.
What do Nigerian exporters actually ship on this lane?
Agri-commodities lead: sesame seed, cashew, hibiscus and similar crops with established Chinese demand, alongside minerals and a growing processed-goods tail. The protocol is cargo-agnostic; the inspection scope adapts to the commodity.
How does an exporter in Nigeria receive payment?
Staged releases from the licensed escrow partner as verified events land, with Nigerian payouts through licensed local payment providers: evidence-triggered payment instead of documents-against-hope.
